Pay Statistics 2010

There are some interesting statistics published by the Office for National Statistics relating to pay within the UK. In summary, the figures taken as at April 2010, show:-

  •  A UK workforce comprised of 12.7 million men, with 88% working full time, and 12.3 million women, with 58% working full time.
  • Gross annual earnings for full-time workers have risen by 0.3% to £25,900.
  •  Median average earnings for full-time male workers have risen by 1.3% to £538 per week and risen by 3.1% to £439 for full-time female workers.
  • The gap between median pay for men and women has shrunk from last year’s figure of 12.2% to 10.2% The gap has been narrowing since tracking began in 1997 when the estimated difference was 17%. The current annual drop is the greatest to date.
  •  Londoners saw the greatest increase in pay whereas workers in Northern Ireland received the lowest pay rises.
  • Regional differences in terms of gross weekly earnings are marked. The UK average is £499 with London figures of £642, £524 in south east England, £489 in the west of England, £488 in Scotland, £451 in Wales, £442 in north east England and £441 in Northern Ireland.

I took these stats from the following BBC article:- Pay gap between men and women narrows, says ONS.
