Survey of Hours and Earnings 2011

As reported in an article on the BBC news website, the provisional results of the 2011 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings were released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics. This is well worth a read for benchmarking purposes.

As the Report states, the survey is based on a 1 per cent sample of employee jobs, drawn from HMRC PAYE records and contains information on the levels, distribution and make-up of earnings and hours paid. Among the Report’s key findings were the following:

  • Median gross weekly earnings for all employees amounted to £404, the same as in 2010. There was however a slight increase in the median gross weekly earnings of full-time employees which the Report indicates had risen from £499 in 2010 to £501 in 2011.
  • For men, full-time earnings rose by 0.2 per cent, compared to a rise of only 1.4 per cent for women.
  • Median gross annual earnings for full time employees were £26,200, representing a 1.4 per cent increase on the 2010 figures.
  • Full-time employees in London had the highest median gross weekly earnings at £651, with full-time employees in Northern Ireland receiving the lowest median gross weekly earnings at £451.

As the BBC article reports, the survey indicates that there continues to be a gender pay gap, although notably it appears that this has reduced when compared with the 2010 figures. Geographical pay disparities are also evident from the Report’s findings.

The full report also contains details on the breakdown of earnings by occupation and overtime earnings. It can be accessed here.
