Blue Monday - The Most Depressing Day Of The Year

If you find yourself having a bad day at work today or just feeling a bit under the weather, don’t be too alarmed…it’s probably because today is, apparently, the most depressing of the calendar year.

According to statistics, today, the 3rd Monday in January, is when we are most prone to feel miserable. Research suggests that this is caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Cold, damp and dark weather

  • An influx of credit card and heating bills

  • The amount of time elapsed since Christmas

  • Broken new year resolutions

  • A lack of motivation

If reading that list alone is enough to make you feel depressed then you might be heartened to learn that there is a website set up by Canterbury College which is dedicated to cheering people up on the day that has been ‘Blue Monday’. Suggestions include joining a charity campaign, visiting someone lonely or baking a cake for your work mates.

If that’s not enough to cheer you up then maybe just knowing that by the end of today you will be one step closer to the weekend and to summer will do the trick, especially since the happiest day of the year apparently occurs in June!
