The Tribunals Service has published its latest annual statistics for the period 2009/2010.
The Tribunals Service Report includes statistics relating to the Employment Tribunal (ET) as well as for the other Tribunals it administrates. Interestingly, the Report states that the number of ET claims in 2009/10 were 56% higher than the previous year. In total a staggering 236,100 claims were received by the ET in 2009/2010. The Report attributes the increase to the economic climate and, largely, to multiple claims (claims brought by a number of Claimants together but arising from same or similar circumstances, for example equal pay or TUPE claims).
Claims brought under the Working Time Regulations (WTR) totalled 95,200 – an increase of 71,200 on 2008-2009. The majority of the WTR claims, however, relate to the 10,600 airline cases resubmitted every 3 months.
When considering cases which include a mix of grounds, 126,300 jurisdictional claims were associated with unfair dismissal, breach of contract and redundancy – a 17% increase on 2008/2009 - and again the report states, unsurprisingly, that the increase is likely to be due to the economic recession.
The report does not provide any details on average Employment Tribunal awards for the main types of claims although hopefully something will be published on this later in the year. I will provide details as soon as there is anything to report.
