Gossip columns this week have been full of coverage of “Brangelina” taking their adopted son Pax on a trip to Vietnam to see his birth grandmother.
The complex Jolie-Pitt family tree highlights the difficult situations that can arise where extended families are concerned. Separation of parents and adoption of children present two very difference scenarios, but in each there may be grandparents or other extended family members who wish to maintain links with a child. In either scenario the focus must always be on what will be in the best interests of the child going forward, but in some cases there may be legal remedies that a grandparent could pursue.
Family Law specialist Anna Forsyth adds “It must be borne in mind that grandparents have no automatic rights in law in respect of their grandchildren. Any grandparents who have difficulties maintaining contact with a grandchild should seek legal advice to assess their options.”
