James has a broad private client practice and heads our Agricultural & Rural team. He specialises in rural property.

He acts for a variety of clients, from individual landowners and farmers to institutional clients and governmental and non-governmental organisations. His clients include the Ministry of Defence, Scottish Agricultural College and Scottish Wildlife Trust.

James has experience and an extensive knowledge of the pre- and post-reform rules on agricultural tenancies and related contracts. He also advises on the negotiation and implementation of options for development or diversification of rural land, business structures and succession planning and is a member of our Private Client, Finance & Investment and Charities teams.

James writes and lectures regularly on agricultural law and rural property matters.  He is an accredited specialist in Agricultural Law by the Law Society of Scotland and a member of the Agricultural Law Association. He is also Clerk of the WS Society, Collector of the Writers to the Signet Dependants’ Annuity Fund and Honorary Consul for Portugal in Edinburgh.
