Asset Protection: Later Life Care

It can often seem very confusing trying to find out what is available to help.

Advancing years need not necessarily bring problems, but there are certainly issues which arise for both the elderly person and their family. We have professional advisers who are experienced in the requirements of looking after elderly clients either at home or in residential care. We can help you with the legal issues and also the more practical things to think about, such as who can provide the best care and how to go about getting it.

The issues impacting old age only affect individuals once in their lives, so it can seem like a minefield. We can build on experience gained through helping many people at this stage. Our service is intended to assist you and your family in addressing those issues.

It can often seem very confusing trying to find out what is available to help.  And if your family has other commitments or lives at some distance, the time available to deal with these things can seem very short. Our service aims to simplify some of the decisions to facilitate the best choices and to achieve practical and caring support of elderly people either at home or in residential accommodation.

Your affairs generally

Please consider granting a Power of Attorney in favour of your trusted family or advisers.  This can alleviate any pressure you feel when managing your affairs and also allows that help to continue beyond the stage where you are no longer capable of attending to matters yourself, should that stage be reached. A separate fact sheet is available on request.

Your home

You may have a lot of capital locked up in your property and need advice on how to release some of it.  That may be through moving to a smaller property or looking at specialist loan products.  Sometimes a former family home is unsuitable for later life and you need to think about a move into supported living or other care.  For all of these things we have experience to help you make the necessary decisions.  We have good knowledge of residential and care options in our area and can make visits on behalf of families to assess any for suitability.  Morton Fraser can also help with arrangements for the move itself.

 Your finances

Care costs can be expensive and decisions need to be made about how to fund these. In that regard you may benefit from a complete review with one of our financial advisers. However, assistance can also be available from your local authority.  It can be difficult to find out exactly what is on offer and it is helpful to speak with people who have been through the process before.  We have helped a number of clients in this area and would be pleased to offer the service to you too.  Morton Fraser can also deal with administration of finances on an ongoing basis, the level of support being agreed on a case by case basis.

Keeping in touch

Our service can also include regular visits and reporting on an agreed basis. This can allow you to stay in control of your affairs for a bit longer and gives reassurance to your family.
