Rural diversification

We work with landowners and land managers, family businesses, factors, and trustees in the purchase, management, development and protection of rural land and estates.

Diversification is an increasingly crucial element in the successful running of a rural enterprise, driven mainly by the growing financial challenges of these uncertain times.

Diversification opportunities, when managed effectively, can provide not only income and future sustainability for rural businesses, but can also create jobs in the wider community.

Whilst landowners for centuries have proven innovative and astute when it comes to making a profit, a new wave of inspiration is sweeping the sector, exemplified by programmes such as Dragons Den, The Apprentice and Country House Rescue.

However, turning ideas into a successful and profitable business whilst protecting your existing interests can be a lengthy and potentially distressing journey without the right advice, as rural entrepreneurs and landowners often face challenges particular to this sector, as well as the more typical challenges of a business start-up.

Here at Morton Fraser we have years of experience in assisting with successful rural diversification. We have a dedicated Rural Diversification team who understand the complex ownership structures which are often encountered in this area and the many considerations which have to be taken into account. Lead by acclaimed Agriculture Law specialist James Rust, our team provide expert advice, guidance and support on:

  • Structures – business start-up structures for commercial entities, family businesses, employee-owned business and partnerships
  • Protection – protecting trademarks, brands, innovations and ideas; tax and private estate considerations
  • Guidance – guidance on balancing business and family interests, as well as legal considerations
  • Support – support in upholding employers’ responsibilities
  • Audits – support to ensure compliance and regulations are followed
