Morton Fraser, one of the largest independent law firms in Scotland, has promoted Matthew Barclay to partner within its Agricultural and Rural team, as the firm continues to invest in the team’s growth.

Matthew joined the firm five years ago as a solicitor, and steps into his new role on the 1st July. He provides advice on a number of rural matters including purchases and sales of farms and estates, agricultural tenancies, crofting and forestry to private clients, businesses and the public sector.  Currently, he is working with the Scottish Government to provide specialist agricultural and crofting advice across their estates.

Michael Ramsay, Partner and Divisional Head of Real Estate at Morton Fraser, said: “Matthew’s promotion is fully merited following his fantastic work and commitment to the firm over the past five years. It has been very pleasing to watch him develop and now assume a senior leadership role in the team.”

Matthew grew up in the Scottish Borders working on his family farm, which his family have resided on for more than 100 years when his great grandfather first purchased the land. Matthew still occasionally lends a hand to his parents on the farm.

Matthew Barclay, Partner in the Agricultural and Rural team at Morton Fraser, said: “I’m very passionate about the farming community in Scotland and take great pleasure in utilising my understanding of the agricultural sector to support the community with legal advice. I’m delighted to join the partnership and am looking forward to the future with our team and continuing to deliver excellent client service.”

Matthew’s promotion has taken place alongside that of Gail Watt who has been promoted to legal director in the Agricultural and Rural team, and follows just after Martin Minton joined the team as senior solicitor.

Michael Ramsay added: “Our Agricultural and Rural team has always had strong presence in the sector and is moving into a new period of investment and growth. We are delighted with the progression of the team over the last couple of months and seek to continue a period of investment in this important, specialist practice.”

The Agricultural and Rural team provides advice to both private and public sector clients, including the Scottish Wildlife Trust and Scottish Government.
