One of our alumni, Alan Henderson, contributed this blog. Alan was a trainee, solicitor and senior solicitor with Morton Fraser, specialising in construction law. In his blog he talks about that experience and how he learned the importance of giving clear advice to allow clients to understand their options and take practical decisions. On leaving Morton Fraser, he moved to work in Dubai and is now a Senior Associate in the Projects and Construction team at Clyde & Co. He also talks about why he continues to refer clients to Morton Fraser.

Morton Fraser is described by Chambers and Partners 2016 as "…a thriving, top ten Scottish law firm delivering clear legal advice".  This is a statement with which I could not agree more.

Not only am I proud to say that I embarked upon my legal career as a trainee with this leading Scottish law firm, but I am equally proud to say that for the last 5 years, Morton Fraser has been my law firm of choice.  It also remains the law firm to which I refer friends and business colleagues in the UK.

I am currently a Senior Associate in the Projects & Construction team at Clyde & Co LLP, based between Dubai and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.  I specialise in international construction arbitration and UAE / Saudi Arabian court matters.  My clients range from international contractors to UAE based small and medium sized businesses. Their needs, preferences and styles vary greatly.

The skills I have and continue to develop in my career arise from the solid legal training I obtained and experiences I had during my 6 years with Morton Fraser.  Being responsible for the training and growth of my own team now, I appreciate the value and benefit of being exposed to practical expert legal advisors in the early stages of your career.

Working with prominent lawyers in the Scottish legal market such as Jonathan Seddon, Partner and Chris Harte, Partner shaped the direction and success of my career.  I can still recall attending meetings with Jonny and being impressed by the way he could distil a complex construction matter so that a client understood its options clearly and could make practical decisions as to the way ahead.  I remember thinking, "I want to be able to do that".

The legal market in the UAE / Saudi Arabia is saturated and challenging.  I am often asked by clients "Why Alan Henderson?" and "Why Clyde & Co?".  Whilst I can and do cite the vast experience that I and my prominent team has, in my experience, what sets a law firm apart from another, and what is ultimately important to a client, is a lawyer / law firm that provides clear, concise and sensible advice.

Looking back now, and based on the experiences I continue to have, I recognise that it is its ability to deliver this service to its clients that sets Morton Fraser apart and that set me up for the successful career I benefit from now.  For this, and many reasons, I will always think fondly of my time at Morton Fraser and watch proudly as it grows from strength to strength.
