The UK Government have published a consultation on parental bereavement leave and pay. The Parental Bereavement (Pay and Leave) Bill as drafted entitles parents who have lost a child under the age of 18 to have 2 weeks' bereavement leave, and for those with the necessary qualifying service, paid leave.
The consultation, which closes on 8 June 2018, seeks views on:-
- the definition of a bereaved parent;
- how and when to take the leave; and
- notice and evidence requirements.
Views are being sought from working parents, employers, groups representing working parents and employers, groups involved in bereavement care, and legal, HR and payroll professionals.
Although the Bill was introduced into Parliament in 2017, reports suggest it will not become law until 2020.
