12 September 2018 marked the 125th anniversary of the HCCH. On 12 September 1893 the first session of the Hague conference took place. Its vision was to conceive strong international legal frameworks to govern private cross border interaction between people and businesses. This vision was the brainchild of a Dutch jurist Tobias Asher who received the Nobel peace prize for his efforts.
Today the HCCH has developed numerous private international law instruments in the areas of international child protection and family law, international civil procedure and legal cooperation as well as international commercial and finance law.
As a family lawyer and international child abduction specialist, one of the most successful conventions is the 1980 Hague Convention. This convention continues to be used worldwide to return abducted children to their country of habitual residence and has deterred countless child abductions.
The reliance on the various Hague Conventions by the UK, particularly in the field of family law, may well heighten depending on what is put in place post Brexit.
The HCCH continues to be one of the most successful international organisations in the field of international private law 125 years after its inception.
