We launched our employment law app back in 2010 for the iPhone. The genesis of the app was our popular Employment Law Factcard, which we first published fourteen years ago, back in 2003. Our factcard was designed for employers to have useful information at their fingertips including disciplinary and redundancy checklists, Employment Tribunal award limits, family friendly leave entitlements and national minimum wage rates.
I have always had an interest in technology and when smartphones and apps came on the scene it was a natural progression for us to create an app based on the information that we included in our Factcard. In fact, we were able to go even further than that given the virtually endless possibilities that an app allows for. This meant that as well as all of the information contained in the Factcard we were able to develop the app so that it also included calculators for unfair dismissal awards, maternity pay and statutory redundancy pay. In addition, it provides links to videos and podcasts with tutorials and updates on specific topical items. And if that wasn't enough, the app also includes our monthly e-news providing all the very latest employment law developments.
Initially, the app was developed for the iPhone and iPad in conjunction with David Laud of R2b Media Limited. We were able to work with David to create a bespoke app which matched our exact requirements. I regularly use the app as a point of reference and I know that many of our clients and contacts do likewise.
To ensure we reached as many clients and contacts as possible I had, for some time, been very keen to launch an android version of the app. With smartphone penetration in the UK rising from 52% to 81% in the past four years we decided it was time to act. I'm delighted that we've now launched the android version enabling all smartphone and tablet users to access what I believe is a great communication and reference tool.
