My job also introduces me to a whole host of opportunities, and at the start of last year I joined the board of West Lothian Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has members who provide all of the services that I've just mentioned, and more, and it's an absolutely fascinating organisation with which to be involved.
As a result of my Chamber connections, Morton Fraser was asked to support a recent inward trade mission that the Chamber was leading on behalf of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, and which welcomed 40 delegates from Ireland looking to support bi-lateral trade between Ireland and Scotland. The visiting delegates covered sectors such as crop nutrition, engineering, facilities management, financial services, logistics, media, retail services, transport and waste and recycling.
One of the other supporters of the mission was AMOSS (www.amoss.ie), which is our 'sister' law firm in Dublin, and which is linked to Morton Fraser via membership of the Interlaw network. Interlaw (www.interlaw.com) is a long-established elite global network of pre-eminent independent law firms comprising over 7,000 lawyers based in over 150 cities around the world. The peer-reviewed, invitation-only network offers businesses across the globe high quality cross-border legal advice via a single point of contact. One of the many beauties of Interlaw is that we invest heavily in making sure that lawyers from the various member firms get to know each other properly by meeting twice a year: once at the AGM, and then separately at the various annual regional meetings (Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East and North America). If I need to recommend a lawyer in another country to one of my clients, the chances are that I'll be able to introduce my client to a lawyer in that jurisdiction who I have met, who I know and most importantly who I can trust to pull out all the stops for my client. Interlaw is not 'just' a database of lawyers and their 'phone numbers and email addresses; it's a close-knit network that operates more effectively than the so-called 'international' law firms.
