We are conscious that having a busy practice means that it is not always easy to keep up with developments in the law. As part of our More for Laywers service we offer an e-news bulletin which provides you with updates on the law in Scotland including everything from recent cases to legislative changes. We would be delighted if you would sign up to become part of our network whether you are based in Scotland or not. If you wish to do so please just follow the sign-up link on the right hand side of this page.
One of the features of our More for Lawyers service is our Annual Conference which we have held now for more than 10 years. The Conference applies for CPD purposes and features talks from Morton Fraser people and guest speakers on the topical legal issues of the day. We typically hold our Conference in central Scotland to make it as accessible as possible for all of you. If you would like to receive an invite for next year's Conference please contact Richard McMeeken and he will gladly add you to our list of invitees.
Court of Session agency work
We regularly act as agents in Court of Session cases and are happy to deal with a broad range of actions on your behalf. We are flexible when it comes to the level of our involvement in a case. We can offer a "post-box service" where we essentially just carry out the administrative duties. Or, as is perhaps more common, we can be heavily involved in an advisory role in order to ease the burden on you.
Sheriff Court agency work
The upcoming court reforms may mean that matters previously dealt with in the Court of Session are now dealt with at sheriff court level. We are regularly instructed by you to appear in sheriff court cases primarily in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We carry out standard agency work at fixed rates. Our standard costs are £60 plus VAT for procedural hearings in ordinary actions and £50 plus VAT for procedural hearings in small claim and summary cause actions.
We also run more substantive hearings, such as proofs and debates for you anywhere in Scotland. Our fee for these matters may depend on what is required although we are happy to discuss dealing with any matter on a fixed fee basis.
Jenny Dickson, Solicitor Advocate and Richard McMeeken, Solicitor Advocate.
Our solicitor-advocates are experienced practitioners, able to advise on most practice areas, including commercial law, reparation, intellectual property, company petitions, property and private client. They appear regularly in the Court of Session and sheriff courts and provide an exceptional level of service. Like advocates they can be instructed in relation to:
- Drafting pleadings;
- Appearance work; and
They are always happy to pick up the phone and discuss matters with you in the first instance if required and they are typically willing to deal with any instruction on a fixed fee basis. Their fees are treated as those of counsel for the purposes of any expenses recovered.
For specialist employment law advice, Andrew Gibson is a Solicitor Advocate in our employment team.
English law services
Much of our practice involves cross-border work and to service the needs of all our clients we have a number of solicitors at the firm who are qualified in English law. Where your clients have English legal problems or a Scots law matter which has an English element to it, our solicitors are happy to advise.
Examples of their practice areas are:
- Debt recovery;
- Family law;
- Commercial property; and
- Defender reparation.
