Austin is an award winning-lawyer and a Partner within our Corporate Division in Edinburgh.

Austin is a recognised expert in corporate and commercial law with almost 30 years' experience. His expertise has been acknowledged by Chambers and Legal 500 where he has been described as exhibiting "great knowledge and professionalism".

He is dual-qualified (Scotland and England/Wales) having practised in England for seven years before moving to Scotland and becoming Scots qualified in 1999. He is also a  director of West Lothian Chamber of Commerce.

Austin is known for finding practical, commercial solutions for his clients by helping them to solve problems that are impeding their business objectives and ensuring that deals are completed in the most commercially expedient manner.

Business expertise

Austin primarily advises owner-managed SMEs. His expertise includes company share/asset sales and purchases, joint ventures (including corporate JVs, LLP/limited liability partnerships and traditional partnerships), shareholder disputes, corporate restructurings, private equity/angel investment (advising investees as well as investors), contractual commercial matters (agency, distribution and franchising etc), IP, IT and data protection.

Austin also provides commercial legal services to businesses in the healthcare sector. Since the start of 2018, Austin's team has been sponsoring the Scottish Institute for Enterprise and the Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network.

Austin recently served two full terms as manager of the Corporate Division and sat on the firm's Management Board. During that period, the turnover of the firm's corporate practice doubled. Austin then stepped down from that role to focus on driving further growth in the practice, with a keen interest in the management of business risk: he sits on the firm's Risk Management Group, its Information Security Forum, and is Morton Fraser's Data Protection Officer.

Austin has previously won the Law Awards of Scotland's 'Corporate Lawyer of the Year' award.
