Protecting an organisation's intellectual property through the use of trademarks, patents, copyright and know how is central to securing the value of that business. Value can also be generated by the exploitation of that intellectual property (IP), for example through licensing. That value can only be realised, however, if a business takes expert legal advice to identify the types of IP that it owns, and to ensure that it is robustly protected to minimise the chances of a successful challenge by a third party. Taking advice at an early stage is key.

Benefits we bring to your business

Our highly skilled team of corporate lawyers, based in Edinburgh and Glasgow, can advise and assist with many aspects of intellectual property and technology law.

We work with a broad spectrum of technology clients, including SMEs and major household names, as well as biotech, life sciences and public sector organisations.

We understand the unique challenges that these organisations face and have recognised experts who can support your business by providing specialist advice on rapidly evolving areas of law, for example IT contracts and cloud computing agreements, where our advice is tailored to maximise the benefits of 'software as a service' (SaaS) business models.

Our team has substantial experience in advising businesses on all areas of intellectual property including trademarks, confidential information, database rights, domain names and copyright. We regularly act for a wide range of clients, including multinational companies, joint ventures, universities, research establishments, private equity houses, angel investors and management teams in the acquisition and exploitation of their IP. We advise clients on the full range of IP rights through the IP lifecycle, including brand management and the implementation of national and international IP strategies for commercialising IP, including the commercialisation of patents.

We also provide guidance and support to clients filing trademark applications in the UK and offer a full legal service on IP infringement matters in the Scottish courts.
